Sustainability is integral to the academic program and to the life of The Meeting School. The Meeting School community is committed to reducing our ecological footprint and implementing practices that lessen our impact on the environment.

All of the homes on campus have a wood-burning capacity to lessen our dependence on fossil fuels. Students and faculty take turns stoking the fires, splitting, stacking and bringing in the wood. There is also a campus-wide agreement to keep the thermostats no higher than sixty-two degrees. We use recycled paper products and grow our own organic produce. We stress the practice of conservation with shut-off reminders on light switches and line-drying clothes as part of our general emphasis on simplicity. There is also a campus-wide recycling program.

The 136 acre farm that makes up the Meeting School property has been in almost continuous use since the eighteenth century. There are thirty-two acres of pasture, two acres of vegetable gardens, and one and a half acres of small and large fruits. Approximately ninety acres are forest.

Farming practices include cover cropping, crop rotation, and the rotational grazing of all farm animals. A large compost program provides nutrition for the pigs and for the land. We also have a large number of perennial herbs and flowers. Gardening takes place year round in our fields and greenhouse. All of the farming practices are organic and we are implementing a number of permaculture principles as well.

The Meeting School programs reflect other broad principles of sustainability. We offer a wide range of courses that teach the right use and sharing of resources. Our Saturday Forums and Intersession program give students opportunities to study other aspects of sustainability in other places, and our financial management is both frugal and mindful of world resource issues. The Meeting School as an institution and individual faculty members practice socially and environmentally conscious investing.
